Expecting parents often have questions about maternity photography, including when to schedule their session, what to wear, and what to expect during the experience. Below are answers to some of the most common questions families ask before booking a maternity session.
As a Lansing maternity photographer, I work with families from Lansing, East Lansing, Okemos, DeWitt, and throughout Mid-Michigan to create simple, timeless maternity portraits in my studio.
Maternity sessions are typically photographed between 28–34 weeks of pregnancy. During this time, baby bumps are beautifully defined while most moms are still feeling comfortable enough for photos.
Many families choose to book their maternity and newborn sessions at the same time. Newborn sessions are usually reserved during the second trimester to ensure availability during those first weeks after baby arrives.
Yes! Husbands and children are always welcome to participate in maternity sessions. While the main focus of the session will be mom and her growing baby bump, we will also capture a few images with your family.
If you have several children participating, you may want to consider a session at The Lansing Studio, which offers more space for families.
At this time I do not offer outdoor sessions. All maternity sessions take place indoors in my studio, where I can create consistent lighting and a calm environment for portraits.
The studio setting is very neutral, which allows most colors to photograph beautifully. I personally recommend soft neutral tones and coordinated outfits for a timeless look.
Dark colors—especially black—tend to conceal the baby bump, which is the main focus of maternity portraits, so lighter tones often photograph best.
Once your session is booked, I will send detailed visual guidance to help you choose clothing that photographs beautifully.
Please note that I do not provide clothing, so clients bring their own outfits for the session.
Because hands are often visible in maternity portraits, I recommend making sure nails are trimmed and manicured for mom, dad, and children before the session.
These small details help create polished, timeless images.
If your baby arrives before your maternity session takes place, your session retainer can be applied toward your newborn session instead.
While we will include a few images with family members, the main focus of the session is mom and her growing baby bump. I work with posing and camera angles to create flattering and natural portraits that highlight this special season.
Many families choose to document both pregnancy and the newborn stage, as these moments pass quickly and beautifully tell the story of welcoming a new baby. Because newborn sessions are typically reserved during the second trimester, many parents find it easiest to plan both their maternity and newborn sessions at the same time to ensure availability.
If you're considering both sessions, feel free to reach out and I’ll be happy to help you plan a timeline that works well for your pregnancy and your baby’s arrival.
