Newborn Photography Frequently Asked Questions

Many expecting parents have questions about newborn photography sessions. Below are answers to some of the most common questions families ask before booking their newborn session.

When should I book my newborn session?

Most families reserve their newborn session during the second trimester to ensure availability. Newborn sessions are typically photographed when baby is 5–14 days old, when babies are still very sleepy and naturally curl into those sweet newborn poses.

If your baby has already arrived or you're past the second trimester, feel free to reach out. I occasionally have last-minute availability and will always do my best to fit you in.

What if my baby is already older than two weeks?

Newborn sessions are ideally photographed when baby is 5–14 days old, when babies are still very sleepy and naturally curl into those classic newborn poses.

If your baby is already a few weeks old, don’t worry—feel free to reach out. I occasionally have availability for last-minute newborn sessions, and slightly older babies can still be beautifully photographed.

For babies who are 3–5 weeks old or older, I often recommend a Lifestyle Newborn Mini Session instead. At this stage, babies are typically more alert and may not enjoy being swaddled or posed for long periods, so a relaxed lifestyle session focusing on natural moments with baby and parents tends to work best.

If you're unsure which session would be the best fit, I’m always happy to help guide you.

Where do newborn sessions take place?

All newborn sessions take place in my Laingsburg studio, conveniently located for families in Lansing, East Lansing, Okemos, DeWitt, and throughout Mid-Michigan.

The studio is prepared with everything needed for your session, creating a calm and comfortable environment for both baby and parents.

What should I bring to the session?

You only need to bring your baby and milk. I provide wraps, blankets, headbands, hats, and all the styling used during your session.

If you have something sentimental you’d like included—such as a special blanket or heirloom—just let me know ahead of time.

What should parents and siblings wear?

Simple, neutral clothing photographs beautifully and keeps the focus on your baby. Soft colors like cream, beige, light gray, and muted earth tones tend to work best.

Once your session is booked, I’ll send additional tips to help you choose outfits that photograph well.

Can parents and siblings be included in the photos?

Yes! Family and sibling images are included with the Newborn Full Session and may also be included in Lifestyle Newborn Mini sessions.

The Newborn Mini Session is designed as a baby-only session, though a single family or sibling pose can be added if desired.

What if my baby is fussy during the session?

Newborn sessions are designed to be relaxed and flexible. We allow plenty of time for feeding, soothing, and settling baby so the session never feels rushed.

Most babies sleep through much of the session, but if they need extra time, we simply take it.

How long does a newborn session take?

Session length depends on the option you choose:

• Newborn Full Session: up to 90 minutes
• Lifestyle Newborn Mini: up to 45 minutes
• Newborn Mini: up to 45 minutes

Which newborn session should I choose?

It depends on the type of images you’re hoping for.

The Newborn Full Session is the most popular option and includes the greatest variety of images, including swaddled and unwrapped baby poses as well as family and sibling portraits.

The Lifestyle Newborn Mini Session focuses on natural connection images with baby and parents in a relaxed studio setting.

The Newborn Mini Session is a simple baby-only session featuring swaddled poses and fewer setups.

If you're unsure which session would be the best fit, feel free to reach out and I’d be happy to help guide you.

When will we receive our photos?

Your gallery will typically be ready within 2 weeks or less after your session. You'll receive a private online gallery where you can download your included images and select any additional favorites if you'd like.  You also have the option to purchase the entire gallery.

Do you offer maternity photos?

Yes! I offer maternity sessions primarily at my home studio in Laingsburg, where we can create simple, timeless portraits celebrating this special season.

If you prefer a larger studio setting, I’m also happy to rent The Lansing Studio when available for an additional charge.

Husbands and older children are always welcome to participate, and there is no additional charge for including them in your maternity session.
