What If My Baby Won't Sleep? | Lansing Newborn Photographer

July 10, 2026

One of the biggest concerns I hear from expecting parents is:

"What if my baby won't sleep during their newborn session?"

If you're worried about your baby staying awake or being fussy during their newborn photos, you're definitely not alone.

The good news is... your baby doesn't have to sleep through the entire session to create beautiful images.

As a Lansing newborn photographer, I've photographed hundreds of newborns over the years, and I've learned that no two babies are alike. Some sleep soundly from start to finish, while others prefer to stay awake and take in everything around them.

No matter what your little one decides to do, we'll create a beautiful gallery you'll treasure for years to come.

The Preparation Guide Really Does Help

The day before your session, I'll send you a detailed preparation guide with a few simple things you can do before arriving.

These instructions aren't meant to add stress—they're simply designed to give us the best chance for a smooth, sleepy session.

You'll receive tips like:

  • Feeding your baby right before leaving home
  • Keeping baby awake for a little while beforehand, if possible
  • Dressing baby in loose, easy-to-remove clothing
  • Bringing a pacifier or bottle if you use one

While these suggestions often help, they're never a guarantee—and that's completely okay.

Babies don't read instruction manuals! Some arrive sleepy and relaxed, while others have plans of their own.

Your Baby Sets the Pace

One of the biggest misconceptions about newborn photography is that every baby sleeps through the entire session.

The truth is, some babies do.

Some sleep for part of the session.

And some don't sleep at all.

This is especially common once babies are older than two weeks. At that age, they're often much more alert, curious, and interested in looking around than they were during those first few days.

Instead of trying to force sleepy poses, I simply work with your baby's personality.

If your baby is sleeping, we'll capture those soft, peaceful newborn portraits.

If your baby is awake, we'll embrace those bright eyes, tiny stretches, sweet expressions, and curious little looks that parents often end up loving just as much.

Every newborn is different, and that's what makes each gallery so special.

Relax and Enjoy the Experience

The best thing parents can bring to their session isn't a perfectly sleepy baby—it's flexibility.

Some sessions move quickly.

Others include extra feeding breaks, diaper changes, cuddles, or simply giving your baby a little more time to settle.

That's all part of newborn photography.

Rather than watching the clock, I follow your baby's lead and adjust the session as needed. My goal is to create a calm, relaxed experience where everyone feels comfortable—parents included.

Years of photographing newborns has taught me that the best images often happen when everyone simply relaxes and lets the session unfold naturally.

Every Gallery Tells a Different Story

One of my favorite things about newborn photography is that no two galleries are ever the same.

Your baby's personality begins to shine from the very beginning.

Some babies are peaceful sleepers.

Some are wide-eyed observers.

Some love being swaddled, while others would rather stretch and wiggle.

That's why I never try to recreate someone else's session.

Instead, I create a gallery that reflects your baby, exactly as they were during those first precious days.

Years from now, you won't remember whether your baby slept through the entire session.

You'll simply be grateful you captured these tiny fingers, sleepy yawns, curious eyes, and all the little details that changed far too quickly.

Ready to Reserve Your Newborn Session?

If you're looking for a newborn photographer in Lansing, I'd love to help you preserve this incredible season.

Most families reserve their session during the second trimester to ensure availability, and I accept only a limited number of due dates each month so every family receives a calm, personalized experience.
