One of the most common questions parents have is: what age is best for newborn photos?
If you're planning newborn photography in Lansing, MI, timing can make a difference in how your images look and how your session flows—but there’s also more flexibility than many parents realize.
The best time for newborn photos is typically between 5–14 days after birth.
During this stage, babies are:
This is when we’re most likely to capture those soft, relaxed, curled-up images that define classic newborn photography.
In the first two weeks, babies are still adjusting to life outside the womb.
That means:
Sessions during this time often feel smooth and relaxed, allowing for a variety of soft, timeless images.
If your baby is already past the two-week mark, you can still have beautiful newborn photos.
At this stage, babies may be:
Sessions become more baby-led and may focus more on natural connection and simple moments—but the images are still just as meaningful.
If you're unsure whether it's “too late,” feel free to reach out. I’m always happy to talk through your baby’s age and what we can create together.
While 5–14 days is ideal, your baby’s comfort always comes first.
I never force a pose or rush the session. If your baby needs time to eat, settle, or be held, we simply go at their pace.
Because this ideal window is so short, most families book their newborn session during the second trimester.
This allows a spot to be reserved around your due date so everything is planned ahead of time.
The first two weeks are ideal for those classic newborn images, but it’s never too late to capture your baby.
Every stage of those early weeks is special in its own way, and I’d love to help you document it.
